In her dissertation, “Professions intended for Women”, Virginia Woolf writes of the internal conflict lots of women endured every single day in the face of a male centered society. The Angel can be “charming”, “sympathetic”, and offers all the features expected of women. Instead of enabling Woolf to create what your woman thinks, the Angel attempts to persuade her to “be sympathetic, be soft, flatter, deceive, use each of the arts and wiles of the sex. By no means let anybody guess that you have a brain of your own. ” If the Angel was not halted, she would have got “plucked the heart out of [Woolf’s] writing. Getting rid of the Angel signifies Woolf’s overcoming of societal pressures to become the cliched Victorian woman. The next important metaphor is of the fisherman in a girl’s wish. In the wish the girl reaches the bottom of any lake which is symbolically accustomed to characterize her mind. The girl lets “her imagination attract unchecked around every ordinary and cranny of the world that lies submerged in the absolute depths of our unconscious being. ” She could think freely and let her imagination take over.
