These types of examples suggest that a Machiavellian approach to corporate ethics and an utter lack of concern for the state of the environment down the road is poor business practice. Yet the moral arguments for businesses demonstrating concern to get the environment, having rigorous accounting ethics and observing regulations regarding buyer safety is that a failure for taking ethical actions often ends in losses of profits. It is far more difficult to argue that a good should disregard the need to make a profit at all, and to place the environment first.
Consider the principles of the Deep Ecology movement, which will point out that Western capitalism and consumerism itself builds waste, and a focus upon maximizing production actually causes harm to environmental surroundings. Deep Ecology principles stress that possibly encouraging individuals to buy even more consumer items, regardless of beginning, is unethical, and that advancements in technology often ends in destruction to the environment. The movement can be against: “the conversion of nature to commodity kind, the emphasis upon financial growth as a panaceaTechnology worship and an unlimited faith in the virtues of science” (Drengson 2011). Although the movement seems quite major, these statements underline the fact that emphasizing success puts humans first. Upon some level, every organization agrees it can easily prioritize their survival, in order that shareholders will have a return on the investment and employees will feel at least somewhat secure about the near future survival with their company. By refusing to acknowledge the need for accounting and other business values, the future of a good and thus aktionär profits and jobs, and also the economic overall health of additional organizations, could possibly be put into jeopardy. But the sort of ‘macro’ environmental focus that could place even profits and an increase in revenue ahead of a firm’s responsibility to the world would be a difficult ‘sell’ to shareholders, the larger business community, and even towards the most socially conscious of workers.
