In the story The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses scenes of violence to criticize the socio-economic approach to early 19th century America. Within these types of scenes, Fitzgerald utilizes his characters as literary equipment to convey the inequality adjacent gender roles and interpersonal class. Fitzgerald exhibits the prejudice between gender through this society by utilizing male character types that disrespect women. Once Tom explains to Myrtle that she has no right to mention Daisy’s brand he fractures Myrtle’s nose with his available hand (37). Through his actions, Mary communicates that Myrtle may be worth little more to him than an object. Fitzgerald suggests that girls in this time hold no value besides that of a commodity to be taken benefit of. He chides the accepted precedent of men keeping away from repercussions for their cruelty towards women. When Tom and Gatsby dispute over Daisy at the motel, Tom says that Daisy gets unreasonable ideas and doesn’t know what she’s undertaking (132). Disallowing Daisy to speak for herself objectifies her, illuminating the view of women while lesser individuals. Fitzgerald advises the ignorance of guys in this era as they are not able to realize their perspective of women is skewed. The use of overwhelming male dominance indicates Fitzgerald’s desire to highlight the issue of gender roles.

Fitzgerald exemplifies the discrimination of people with lower social status through heroes that participate in different rates in world. During Tom and Gatsby’s argument inside the hotel, Mary calls these Mr. No one from Nowhere and a common swindler (130, 134). Because of Gatsby’s lowly position, Ben views him as a substandard being. Through Tom’s demeaning tone, Fitzgerald indicates in a number of distaste for the people beneath them in status. Although Daisy is at wrong doing for killing Myrtle, Gatsby admits he can take the to take responsiblity for the episode (144).
