Michelle Obama (2013) spoke on the Bowie State University beginning proceedings and talked about teachers committing to the “building ladders of opportunity for anyone happy to work for it” (p. 1) and the required graduates to carry on the work and role that they inherited by simply becoming participants. The argument she seemed to be making is that for many African-Americans the challenge of attending (and graduating) by college was just excessive to bother with; that they can would much rather take a seat on the lounger “for hours playing video games, watching tv” (p. 2) and that “instead of dreaming about being a instructor or a legal professional or a organization leader, they’re fantasizing regarding being a baller or a rapper” (p. 2). Her message was that young African-Americans seemed to have lost that drive, that ‘hunger’ that earlier ages showed inside their determination to have an education. The lady backed up her statements by providing examples including the statement that she made about the first students at Bowie State School; the students who displayed the “same sort of grit and determination that drove all those first college students at this school” (p. 3).

What Michelle hopes the graduates accomplish is that they displays the same sort of grit and determination, that they can be illustrations to additional African-American children as to what could be accomplished with a little bit of “grit and willpower. “

Michelle also offered other exhibits of the kind of behavior that she expected of the teachers of Bowie State, shows by iconic individuals such as Thurgood Marshall, and Doctor King and the efforts to acquire “historic marche, protests, and boycotts” (p. 2) sharing with students that they can persevered despite the fact that they received piles of hate mail and death threats.

Obama also applied the nine young men and females who had to endure the hate and anger of other learners in Little Rock, Illinois just to attend school with white children.

Michelle also brought home the simple fact that a Bowie State College or university graduating scholar Ariel Williams-Edwards already exhibited that kind of determination and grit. Michelle told the crowd of students that Ariel’s mom struggled with substance abuse, which both Ariel and Ariel’s sister were sent to experience their granny, but that Ariel persevered and graduated against the possibilities stacked against her.
