Andrew Knutson had a fierce will and sometimes savage temper, both illustrated in the pursuing, in which some background is definitely provided since it illustrates the society Knutson lived in:
In 1805 an associate of Jacksons deprecated the manner in which Captain Joseph Ervin had managed a wager with Knutson over a horses race. Ervins son-in-law, Charles Dickinson became enraged and started fighting with Jacksons friend which will lead to Jackson becoming engaged. Dickinson published to Knutson calling him a coward and a great equivicator.
The affair continued, with more insults and misunderstandings, till Dickinson published a statement inside the Nashville Review in May 1806, calling Jackson a useless scoundrel, a poltroon and a coward.
Jackson challenged Dickinson into a duel quite definitely according to the customs of the time inside the south. Dickinson, known as one of the best shots in Tennessee in the event that not the very best, had range of weapons and chose pistols.
Dickinson fired the first taken, which broke two of Jacksons ribs and lodged two inches via his heart. Dickinson then simply had to stand at the tag as Jackson, clutching his chest, aimed slowly and shot him fatally.
Nevertheless acceptable by the code in the times, a large number of people deemed it a cold-blooded getting rid of. I believe the rules of engagement had been for each guy to pull and fireplace at the same time, after hearing the signal, when one dismissed, there was no second round until the different man terminated. The inference is that magnanimity would have needed Jackson to fire into the air flow rather than taking a slow deliberate aim at twenty-four feet.
Jacksons injury never healed properly and abcesses created around the topic, causing pain and some debilitation for Jacksons remaining 39 years.
