Suspense is often used by copy writers in scary and secret stories as a way to keep the reader glued to the book. One particular story that conveys this can be August High temperature by T. F. Harvey that keeps you mesmerized by continuous feeling of suspense. The story revolves around a person named called James Clarence who appears to have a very coincidental day as he finds a man who looks exactly as the drawing he made and a gravestone made for him. Throughout the account, W. Farreneheit. Harvey makes suspense employing gothic books such as the mystical setting of a hot time in August, using the uncanny to achieve the reader query the story, and foreshadows that cause you to keep going.
The uncanny plays a huge role through the story. Wayne Clarence decided one day to sketch out a perfect image that is constantly shows in his head of a man ready to be sentenced to jail. He strolls into a thunderous mason’s workplace and seems a sudden peace and quiet and aimana vu that appears as he notices that “it was the man [he] had been drawing”(63). The fact the fact that man approached him “smiling, as if [they] were older friends” triggers the reader to appreciate the suspense in the unusual getting together with (67-68). The familiarity involving the two character types is a puzzle and even as they try to develop ways they could’ve attained each other, this still feels unusual intended for the main figure. The incertidumbre that the uncanny creates provides a very strange presence within the story.
Throughout the story, unknown is often utilized to create incertidumbre as well. The setting alone is a mystery as the the main personality is mysteriously drawing a image that came from his head. He describes the sketch since “the most sensible thing [he] acquired done” and the fact that this individual meets in the same precise person he had drawn and the gravestone that portrays him is a unknown as well (1-24). The drawing creates a mysterious ambiance because the reader questions so why the man sketched a drawing of a person being sentenced to jail. This creates suspense mainly because when he later meets the man, the reader is aware what his true motives are and wonder just how he would take action.
W. Farrenheit. Harvey continuously uses foreshadowing to efficiently create the suspense inside the story throughout the drawing and gravestone. For that reason first sketch the David drew, when he meets the person, the reader may foreshadow the fact that man is actually a criminal and the main figure should be cautious. James identifies the man in the drawing to “the sense that his expression presented was not a lot one of horror as of say, absolute failure (31-32). ” This descriptions leaves you wondering if the man he meets is a criminal and will end up him. The suspense can now be clarified when gravestone is usually described with an inscription that says “Sacred to the Recollection of James Clarence Withencroft” which certainly conveys the simple fact that he can die that day (100-110). Foolishly, the James allows the present of staying with the man’s home for the day leading to his death within the hot time of Aug.
