Xenia because an Establishment of Order in Homeric Society
Xenia, the custom of hospitality in Homeric society, is widely used in Homer’s “The Odyssey. ” While xenia just visited times extended to friends out of the goodness of a the guts, it was more often extended like a method of keeping order and avoiding conflict. Not only would xenia infatuate guests with their hosts and hostesses, often moving them to extend going back xenia if the opportunity come up; xenia was also a means of pleasing and honoring the gods, since visitors were believed to be directed from the gods for a certain purpose. The moment xenia is observed, peacefulness and order prevail, as it did when Odysseus’ kid Telemachus went to Nestor. When ever xenia is not observed – possibly by number or guests – turmoil ensues.
With regards to Telemachus’ trip to Nestor, Telemachus was combined with the goddess Minerva and Nestor sought to prize the gods by getting him hospitably.

The giving of gifts upon a guest’s departure is a crucial aspect of xenia. In the case of Telemachus and Nestor, Nestor obeyed the goddess Minerva and supplied him with a staff of mounts, in addition to a housekeeper and provisions in the form of “bread and wine… And meat too, foodstuff fit intended for the sons of king” (Book a few, lines 537-538). Having been the recipient of such gifts and good will certainly, Telemachus left Nestor’s house on superb terms while using man.
By contrast, the suitors who “continue to hemorrhage [Odysseus’] home white” happen to be eventually slain or driven from the house in disgrace (Book 1, line 296). The suitor’s violation of xenia outcomes not only in their own deaths, in the fatalities of a lot of slaves who also either placed with the suitors in a sexual manner, or perhaps betrayed Odysseus’ house rather than the suitor’s will.
