Excerpt from Term Paper:

Dobyns’s poem, in the beginning, seems to be built on the exact opposite landscape. With a remarkably more somber tone, “Counterparts” appears to exemplify the Apollonian qualities of clarity, restraint, and sobriety in the construction of a work of art that is meant to mirror an occurrence in the real world and so formulate an experience through the fa?onnage of fine art, via kind. “This can be described as country of smaller wars, ” the speaker tells us:

You have your workplace and hacienda house, the foreign car

And relatives. You remain not necessary. I realize

Your face in a photograph through the war, surrounded

By military convinced by way of a smiles. [… ]

However in this poem, which appears to be in homage to someone who the speaker has shed in a war, the not logical, wild vagaries of characteristics continuously affect the speaker’s attempts by making perception of his lost, therefore pointing for the Dionysian motif of the wholeness of presence, the fact that boundaries distancing our particular notions of nature, life, and fatality are finally interconnected. That is why the speaker’s body, feelings, and connections with/observations with the natural universe continue to intersect throughout the course of the poem:

All things desire

To be surrounded by stone. There exists rain on my hands.

You will find the steady thud of chickens falling into hills

Sloping with lamb. We remember the art of rot.

A speedy and pervading gray moves through my hand

Cloud covered and accustomed to war. A bone

Can be my tool. It may not have been mine. [… ]

The very fact that the audio is uncertain about whether “the bone” he mirrors as his weapon was his yet again unites the Apollonian with the wild questions that characterize the Dionysian motif. As a result, “Counterparts” in lots of ways evokes the Apollonian and Dionysian while counterparts which could never end up being separated from another.
